Furniture description
| The cherry tree in front of our house died about ten years ago. Laurent, our friend and a lumberjack, sawed the tree into a few big sections and I stored them outside. ‘I’ll do something later,’ I said to myself, ‘with that precious cherry wood.’ A few weeks ago I picked up one of the sections and it seemed to be a bit too light. Something was wrong. Ants were crawling in and out, and the base of it was in the process of rotting away. What should I do? My grandfather, a cabinet maker and my teacher, wouldn’t have hesitated. He would have thrown the section away. I decided against that. I started sanding, cleaning and working the wood. I liked the collection of holes and corridors made by the ants.
The result is a glass-topped table which clearly shows the ants’ efforts.
